National Brain Awareness Week (BAW), founded and coordinated by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, is a global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research. During BAW, participants organize innovative activities to educate and engage people of all ages about the brain. During the week of April 20, Russell Cohen '12 brought Brain Awareness Week to Sarah Lawrence with two talks that informed and inspired the campus community.

Reunion 2011 was our biggest Reunion yet -- with over 625 in attendance. We captured you on camera, talking with old (and new) friends, participating in seminars, performing in Cabaret, and getting down on the dance floor Saturday night.

Watch Arianna Huffington's Commencement Address

Sarah Lawrence College held its 83rd Commencement on Friday, May 20, 2011, under a tent on the South Lawn in the shadow of Westlands. A joyful crowd gathered to celebrate the class of 2011's 287 bachelor's candidates and 144 master's candidates. Internet publishing entrepreneur Arianna Huffington delivered the keynote address, for which she received a standing ovation.

Spy Class, Decades Later, Becomes a Play
|
|
Sheila Schwartz '80 first studied history's famous spies in the late 1970s, in a class taught by her don, Jefferson Adams. The course, "Intelligence and Diplomacy in Modern History," examines how intelligence gathering and covert action influence the course of historical events. The class made such an impression that three decades later, Schwartz is still thinking about the world of espionage. In fact, she wrote a play about it: Spy Garbo, which debuted off-Broadway this spring.

SLC Registers as NCAA Exploratory Member
|
|
This spring, Sarah Lawrence is taking what Dean of Studies Al Green calls "a natural step": the College is applying to become a member of NCAA Division III. It's a move that the administration hopes will enhance the student experience. Participation in varsity sports on-campus has grown steadily in the past 15 years, with 125 athletes playing on 12 varsity teams. NCAA Division III is designed for small liberal arts colleges. In Division III, as at Sarah Lawrence, athletes are students first. "Division III is about making sure athletics is folded into the rigor of the academics," says Dean Green.

Private Portions is proud to announce the release of the Completely Normal Activity web series' official trailer available to view online at www.completelynormalactivity.com in HD which is co-directed and produced by, Adrienne Dawes '04. Completely Normal Activity is an improvised paranormal comedy web series starring Bryan Beckwith as Richie, a twenty-something slacker who squanders settlement money on surveillance equipment to document suspected "paranormal activity" in his apartment.

Susan Thomas '68 MFA 1980 announced the publication of her translation book, Lost Voyage: Selected Poems of Giovanni Pascoli. This first appearance of the poems of Giovanni Pascoli, an important 19th Century Italian poet, in English translation provides an introduction to his work for the English-speaking reader. Susan also has a forthcoming book from Fomite Press, The Empty Notebook Interrogates Itself.

Dawn Kramer '67 announces Body of Water, which combines video installation and a live performance. Body of Water explores the delicate relationship between human beings and the sea. Choreography is by Dawn Kramer, with video and lighting, and photography by Stephen Buck.
