A Commemoration of the FREEDOM RIDERS of 1961 Reflecting on Liberty, Democracy, and Freedom in America

Sarah Lawrence College in cooperation with Arts Westchester will present a program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides of 1961 during the month of November, 2011. Freedom Riders were civil-rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated, southern United States to test the 1960 United-States Supreme-Court decision Boynton v. Virginia. November 1, 2011 will be the 50th anniversary of the date when the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) issued the necessary orders–and the new policies went into effect–which permitted passengers to sit wherever they pleased on interstate buses and trains; “white” and “colored” signs came down in the terminals; separate drinking fountains, toilets, and waiting rooms were consolidated; and the lunch counters began serving people regardless of race.

The program to be held at Sarah Lawrence College, “Commemorating the Freedom Riders of 1961: “Reflecting on Liberty, Democracy, and Freedom in America,” will include an art exhibition, film, academic lecture, spoken word, music and personal accounts of Freedom Riders.

Mark your calendars for Reunion 2012: Thursday, May 31 - Sunday, June 3rd!

Reunion weekend is the perfect time to reminisce, reconnect, and return to Sarah Lawrence. You'll have the opportunity to take a seminar, go on local tours, explore new buildings on campus, cheer or perform at a cabaret, admire the work of fellow alumnae/i at an art exhibit, and of course dance to your heart's content on Westlands Lawn. If all of the above works up an appetite, there's always midnight breakfast after the dance and a champagne brunch the next morning! Faculty also look forward to seeing you during Reunion, so don't miss out!

For a sneak peak of what Reunion weekend is like, check out this video of Reunion 2011 created by Mario Paniagua '09
