A Commemoration of the FREEDOM RIDERS of 1961 Reflecting on Liberty, Democracy, and Freedom in America

Sarah Lawrence College, in cooperation with Arts Westchester, presents a program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides of 1961 during the month of November. Freedom Riders were civil-rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated, southern United States to test the 1960 United-States Supreme-Court decision Boynton v. Virginia.

On November 30 at 7:30 pm., there will be performances of traditional protest and gospel songs and inspirational music in the Reisinger Concert Hall on the Sarah Lawrence campus.

Mark your calendars for Reunion 2012: Thursday, May 31 - Sunday, June 3rd!

Reunion weekend is the perfect time to reminisce, reconnect, and return to Sarah Lawrence. You'll have the opportunity to take a seminar, go on local tours, explore new buildings on campus, cheer or perform at a cabaret, admire the work of fellow alumnae/i at an art exhibit, and of course dance to your heart's content on Westlands Lawn. If all of the above works up an appetite, there's always midnight breakfast after the dance and a champagne brunch the next morning! Faculty also look forward to seeing you during Reunion, so don't miss out!

For a sneak peak of what Reunion weekend is like, check out this video of Reunion 2011 created by Mario Paniagua '09

What Would a Charitable IRA Rollover Mean for You?

A charitable IRA “rollover” may help you make a larger gift to Sarah Lawrence than you ever thought possible. It may help you make a gift, even if you thought you couldn't do it this year.

The IRS is again permitting IRA owners age 70 and one half years or older to make direct tax-free transfers to charities like Sarah Lawrence, before December 31, 2011. The total of these transfers may not exceed $100,000 per tax year. These transfers will qualify—in part or in whole—for the yearly required IRA minimum distributions, yet they will not be considered taxable income to the IRA owner.

This means that your IRA assets could be an important new source of charitable gifts. What a difference you could make for Sarah Lawrence! If you don't qualify, perhaps your spouse does… Please check with your professional advisers to see if a Charitable IRA Rollover Gift might be the best idea for you. Thank you!
