WEB HIGHLIGHTS

Registration for new and continuing students went beautifully. Welcoming new students made some at Sarah Lawrence College so happy they could sing, so they did...at least those brave enough did.

On Wednesday, September 12, Sarah Lawrence College will hold a campus wide celebration in honor of the College's Nobel Prize winning faculty member (1941-46) Maria Goeppert Mayer, one of only two women to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics.

The celebration will include a faculty panel, a reception, and the dedication of the College's Physics lab in Mayer's honor. There will also be a lecture by physicist Jim Gates Jr., who makes inspiring connections between his work on superstring/M theory and other human ways of knowing the universe, including art, math, music, and even theology.

Dr. Maria Goeppert Mayer was dedicated to "teaching as it is done at Sarah Lawrence—not the mere imparting of knowledge, but the human contact with developing personalities." Despite her willingness to serve her country by working on the Manhattan Project, Dr. Mayer was committed to Sarah Lawrence, declaring that if war work "imperiled the possibility of my return to Sarah Lawrence, the personal sacrifice demanded is too much". The National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Management Council has approved Sarah Lawrence College's application to become a provisional member.

TimesUnion.com reports that Governor Andrew Cuomo has named Writing faculty member Marie Howe the State Poet of New York. Howe is the 10th poet to hold the two-year title. Of her work, Stanley Kunitz, the first named State Poet of the State of New York, says, "Marie Howe's poetry is luminous, intense, and eloquent, rooted in an abundant inner life. Her long, deep-breathing lines address the mysteries of flesh and spirit, in terms accessible only to a woman who is very much of our time and yet still in touch with the sacred.".

In a post praising the benefits of green roofs, the blog Nano Patents and Innovations cites Sarah Lawrence College as a leader of the green roof trend now being embraced by more colleges. SLC constructed its first green roof atop the LEED-certified Heimbold Visual Arts Center in 2004, and more recently greened the roof of Taylor Residence Hall.

Sarah Lawrence College has best faculty according to The Princeton Review

According to a survey of the Best 377 Colleges: 2013 Edition, published by The Princeton Review, the best professors are at Sarah Lawrence College. Ranked #1 for "Professors Get High Marks," Sarah Lawrence also scored in the top 20 of 12 of the 62 ranking categories compiled by the popular college guide, including "Best Classroom Experience," "Best College Theatre," and "Class Discussions Encouraged."

Discussing the rankings on NBC's TODAY show on the day of publication, August 21, The Princeton Review's senior vice president and publisher, Robert Franek, referred to the "energetic and brilliant faculty," with whom students study one-on-one at Sarah Lawrence.

"Of course, we ourselves have always known we have the best faculty and best teaching in the country, but it is a welcome event to have this college guide make it public," said President Karen Lawrence in a message to the College's constituencies.
