Katie Lippa '95 announced the publication of her first book, Hiding in Water: A Memoir Based Mostly in Reality. In the years before she was born, author Katherine Lippa’s father co-founded a group in which the participants believed they could levitate and move buildings with their minds. His parenting style was based on the premise that all people have a psychic nature and that with special training, a child can harness and build on those abilities. Young Miss Lippa was a willing participant in the experiment until the day she came to believe that her “powers” caused an unforgivable tragedy. Told with a surprising amount of humor and insight, Hiding in Water uses its unique platform to share a universal story of reconciling belief with reality: belief in ourselves and in others.

Beverly Falk '70 announced the release of her new book, Teaching Matters: Stories from Inside City Schools. As public schools become increasingly embattled by budget shortfalls, crowded buildings, and ever-more-rigid curricula, the burden of these restrictions has drastically changed the way children are expected to learn. Nowhere is this more obvious or more devastating than classrooms in high-need urban areas. Drawing upon teachers' firsthand experiences in some of today’s most demanding schools, Beverly Falk and Megan Blumenreich take readers into a variety of classrooms to witness the art of teaching at its most creative and effective, with a focus on early childhood and elementary school.

They follow educators as they strive to change systems that fail to address the needs of their students, from efforts to break the silence about homophobia in schools and multipronged strategies to build stronger relationships with immigrant families to the modification of ineffective curriculum to foster the growth of the “whole child.” This book offers an insider’s look at some challenging and relevant questions in education today.

The book is available on Amazon.

Peter Trachtenberg '74 announced his new book, ANOTHER INSANE DEVOTION, will be published by Da Capo Press on November 13, 2012.

From "a genuine American Dostoevsky" (The Washington Post): a dazzling, funny, bittersweet exploration of the mysteries of relationship, both human and animal. When his favorite cat Biscuit goes missing, Peter Trachtenberg sets out to find her. The journey takes him 700 miles and many years into his past-- into the history of his relationships with cats and the history of his relationship with his wife F., who may herself be on the verge of disappearing. What ensues is a work that recalls travel narratives from The Incredible Journey to W. G. Sebald's The Rings of Saturn. Trachtenberg ponders the mysteries of feline intelligence (why do cats score worse on some tests than pigeons?), the origins of their domestication, their terrible treatment during the Middle Ages. He also looks at the riddle of human love, and at all the unforeseen places that insane devotion leads us.

"Peter Trachtenberg is such a wonderful writer, and this book is so damn good, that I found myself carried along by its lucidity, its generosity, it's deep wisdom", said Nick Flynn.
