"Bread and Butter," a new book by Michelle Wildgen MFA '02, was recently featured in the New York Times Sunday Book Review.

Britt and Leo have spent ten years running Winesap, the best restaurant in their small Pennsylvania town. They cater to their loyal customers; they don't sleep with the staff; and business is good, even if their temperamental pastry chef is bored with making the same chocolate cake night after night. But when their younger brother, Harry, opens his own restaurant—a hip little joint serving an aggressive lamb neck dish—Britt and Leo find their own restaurant thrown off-kilter. Britt becomes fascinated by a customer who arrives night after night, each time with a different dinner companion. Their pastry chef, Hector, quits, only to reappear at Harry's restaurant. And Leo finds himself falling for his executive chef-tempted to break the cardinal rule of restaurant ownership. Filled with hilarious insider detail—the one-upmanship of staff meals before the shift begins, the rivalry between bartender and hostess, the seedy bar where waitstaff and chefs go to drink off their workday—Bread and Butter is both an incisive novel of family and a gleeful romp through the inner workings of restaurant kitchens.

Congratulations to Ansel Elkins '05 for winning the 2014 Yale Series of Younger Poets competition for her manuscript "Blue Yodel," which will be published in April 2015.

"Through her arresting use of persona, in particular, Ansel Elkins reminds us of the pivotal role of compassion in understanding others and -- more deeply and often more disturbingly -- our various inner selves," series judge Carl Phillips says.  "Razor-edged in their intelligence, southern gothic in their sensibility, these poems enter the strangenesses of others and return us to a world at once charged, changed, brutal, and luminous."

Allan Gurganus '72 announces the publication of Local Souls. With this trio of linked novellas, Gurganus returns to Falls, N.C., the setting of his Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All. The New York Times says that his “vast creative and imaginative powers, still rooted in the local, are increasingly universal in scope and effect. The book is an expansive work of love…the emotional misalignments in his fiction feel both understandable and familiar… Gurganus registers an enormous amount of compassion for the characters he holds to the fire.” And Ann Patchett ’85 says “Allan Gurganus breathes so much life into the town of Falls, North Carolina, his reader is able to walk down the streets and mingle with the local souls. This book underscores what we have long known—Gurganus stands among the best writers of our time.” Gurganus is a Guggenheim Fellow and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Adaptations of his fiction have earned four Emmys.

Soma Mei Sheng Frazier '00 announces her book is slated for release this winter.  Collateral Damage: A Triptych is winner of the 2013 RopeWalk Press Editor's Fiction Chapbook Award.  $1 from each book sold benefits First Place for Youth: an Oakland-based nonprofit providing intensive services to foster youth at the critical juncture when they "age out" of the system.

Brilliant is a word usually associated with diamonds therefore this is the appropriate word for Soma Mei Sheng Frazier who writes like a young Toni Morrison: clear, clean yet heart skipping for all the things she is not telling.  Crisp.  Deliciously enticing as the story unfolds.  Soma is a wonderful writer on the rise.  Perhaps I should have started this story with the first star of evening, visible to our planet but hark on of another shore, lighting our sky.  We walk the beach with her.  And the tide pulls the diamonds to our hands. --Nikki Giovanni

Derek B. Miller '92 announced that his debut His debut novel, Norwegian by Night, was released in May 2013 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The New York Times says that this extraordinary novel "has the brains of a literary novel and the body of a thriller."

Sheldon Horowitz - 82 years old, impatient, and unreasonable – is staying with his granddaughter's family in Norway when he disappears with a stranger's child. Sheldon is an ex-Marine, and he feels responsible for his son's death in Vietnam. Recently widowed and bereft, he talks to the ghosts of his past constantly. To Norway's cops, Sheldon is just an old man who is coming undone at the end of a long and hard life. But Sheldon is clear in his own mind. He'd heard the boy's eastern European mother being murdered, and he's determined to protect the child from the killer and his Balkan gang. With an endearing combination of dexterity and daring, Sheldon manages to elude the police in what is hostile, foreign territory for him. But what he doesn't know is that the police and the gang both know where he's heading. Norwegian by Night is the last adventure of a man coming to terms with the tragedy of his own life as he tries to save another's. It combines laconic, deadpan humour, moral seriousness, visceral grief, and narrative tensions in a remarkable way.

Whether we’re pouring ourselves a bowl of cereal, grabbing a quick sandwich, or congregating for a family dinner, our mealtime habits are living artifacts of our collective history—and represent only the latest stage in the evolution of the American meal."

Caitlin McDonald '05 is pleased and proud to announce that my second book, a volume of collected essays titled "Belly Dance Around the World: New Communities, Performance and Identity," has just been published by McFarland press.

From Caitlin:

I am very proud to have a part in this project which I believe is a real advancement to global scholarship in dance and globalization studies. It was a real joy to work with contributors from all over the globe who each brought such insightful and unique additions to the volume.

My own contribution is on belly dance in the online game Second Life, looking at the success or failure of bodily representations of dance in a digitized format.

What most excites me about the book is that we are donating the royalties to Women for Women International, an organization dedicated to supporting women survivors of war through economic, health, and social education programs.

Martha Scoppa '72 shared the following announcement:

On December 22, 2012 Margaret Alic, Bella Brodzki, Linda Clendenin Curtis-Bey, Katy Koken, Charlene McCoin, Carol Prindle, Diane Murphy Ramo, Martha Scoppa, Estha Weiner, and Lillie Wilson ('72) held a 1968 Rothschild D Freshman Reunion at Diane's apartment in New York City. Many of us had not seen each other since 1969. This remarkable reunion brought us together from as far as Kabul, where Carol currently teaches at the American University of Afghanistan. To our great regret, Janet Woodman was missing from this special event, as was Karen Ashley, who died of ovarian cancer several years ago. It was a great celebration of our bond, our generation and the College!

The group shot on the left features in the front row, from left to right: Katy Koken, Bella Brodzki, and Lillie Wilson. The back row, from left to right is Charlene McKoin, Diane Murphy Ramo, Martha Scoppa, Estha Weiner, Carol Prindle, Linda Clendenin Curtis-Bey, and Margaret Alic. The second photo features Charlene McKoin on the left and Linda Clendenin Curtis-Bey on the right.
