Elissaveta Iordanova MFA '00 announced the premiere of "The Rose Valley". This is a multi- disciplinary project, partially supported by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, which shares the beauty of the traditional Bulgarian heritage and showing vibrant Bulgarian folk dances and popular songs from the repertoire of the Mystery of Bulgarian voices. The staged performance is inspired by the Rose Valley in Bulgaria, a place of stunning natural beauty. Elissaveta Iordanova, the creative director of the project, is a dance artist and a choreographer with professional experience, long lasting interest and specialty in Bulgarian Folk dance and in-depth knowledge of Bulgarian folkloric heritage. UTV's Scholarship Fund will provide tuition support for Mexican participants as well as tuition, travel and accommodation assistance for younger writers from abroad. Katy Butler '71 announced that her first book (nonfiction narrative), Knocking on Heaven's Door, is a memoir of the six years she spent helping to care for her declining parents, her struggle to give them "Good Deaths" and the forces within medicine that stood in the way. The book has gotten great review, was an immediate New York Times bestseller, and named one of the ten best memoirs of 2013 by Publisher Weekly. The NYTimes called it "a triumph." It continues to open up conversations about how we're transforming and prolonging the dying process, especially among those in my generation caring for elderly parents.

Nancy Reibel Alvarez '70 announces the publication of her new book, The Girls and Me. The phone jars Rebecca awake: "Naomi in jail. Come," says the heavily accented voice. Her eldest daughter has been helping the rural poor in 'Nicador' for months. The mother and her younger daughter, Sadie, fly south two days later to get Naomi out of this foreign jail, only to discover that the issue of her release is 'if', not 'when'. All three must find a way to cope, and to have a life in the midst of this painful new reality. Riley Strom '13 recently opened an art gallery in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn. The space is a converted old 99 Cents Store, and more than 500 people attended the opening. The show sold out all of the art that was exhibited. She has another show in 2 weeks and has been added as a part of the Brooklyn Art Walk at the end of May.

Red Monsoon, directed by the young director Eelum Dixit '09, is set to be released on May 9 in various cinema halls around Nepal. Based on an unpublished short story, Sharan, by Karuna Sharma, the film explores the entangled lives of its three protagonists—Krishna, Chetana and Karuna, set against the backdrop of the Rato Macchendranath festival. Director Dixit studied stage and film acting and directing at SLC. Other SLC connections include producer (and CCE student) Ruth Moe and faculty member Douglas MacHugh. The director of photography is Brian Emery '07, the technical director of the Filmmaking, Screenwriting & Media Arts at Sarah Lawrence College.

World-renowned artist, Claire Jeanine Satin '56 has created a video as a result of her research during a 2009 and 2012 artistic residency in Venice. She has recently been awarded a third residency there for the spring of 2015. The video, “Waters of Venice/Remembering Henry James,” is currently being presented in Florence, Milan and Venice. It includes an original sound component by the composer Juraj Kojs with the collaboration of video artist Rodrigo Arcaya.

Clarinetist David Kraukauer '78 premieres his most adventurous project to date, "The Big Picture", at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. He recently connected for his residency at John Zorn's place The Stone earlier in 2013. The "Big Picture" premiere is scheduled for January 29 with an extended performance run throughout February 2014. The CDs for this project will be released nationwide on February 18.

THUMBPRINT, a new work for opera- theater based on a long monologue by Yankowitz, brings human rights advocate Mukhtar Mai's harrowing, triumphant story to vibrant life in this world premiere co-produced by Beth Morrison Projects and HERE. Rachel Dickstein directs and Steven Osgood conducts. Susan is the librettist and Kamala Sankaram '00 is the composer on this project.

Madeline Kearin '11 announced that she is currently acting as the co-director of an archaeological excavation of the St. George's/St. Mark's Church site in Mount Kisco, NY. The site was occupied by two successive churches and was connected to key events in the Revolutionary War, including the Battle of White Plains and the march of Rochambeau's army. The excavation is the first in thirty years conducted by the Louis A. Brennan Lower Hudson Chapter of the New York Archaeological Association. Madeline graduated from NYU with a Master's degree in art history and archaeology and is currently applying to Ph.D. programs in archaeology. Patrick Metzger '10 presents the music video for a song he wrote called "Into the Green," performed with his band The Apple Kickers.
The creation of this video was made possible by an all-star cast of Sarah Lawrence alumni. The alumni connection begins with the other musicians joining Patrick on the song, Amie Rose Anderson '10 (guitar, vocal) and Liam O'Brien '12 (fiddle). The video was directed by Eliot Routh '12, with cinematography and editing by Gabriel Barreto '12, assistant director Caroline Pless '12, with their production company, No More Cookies Productions. The dancers in the video are from the movement group Tree Project (founded on the SLC campus), and consist of Mandy Hackman '09, Cristina Jasen '06, Elaine Ruscetta '08, Larissa Sheldon '10. The song was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Patrick Metzger '10 (banjo, vocal).

Sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts--"Girl on Girl" is a groundbreaking documentary that covers new territory in the LGBTQ genre. By focusing its lens on the lives of feminine lesbians, Girl on Girl invites the audience to discover what life is like for women whose identity is incessantly trivialized, both outside of and within queer spaces. Samantha Fein '08 announced that her paper proposal was accepted for presentation at the Critical Information Graduate Student Conference, hosted by the School of Visual Arts MFA Program in Art Criticism and Writing. Critical Information is an interdisciplinary conference, which explores current scholarship at the intersection of art, media, and society. Her research will discuss the ways in which Haitian artists express and interpret their experiences through the iconography of Afro-Carribean spirituality.
This all-day event will be held on Sunday, December 8th, 2013 at 132 W. 21st Street in New York City. It is free and open to the public.

Aura Rosenberg '71 announces her new painting exhibit, Scene/Obscene. The paintings in Scene/Obscene, are culled from an online archive of porn photographs from The Golden Age. Some are images of the complete scene (or at least the scene as originally framed); others are enlarged details from these photos that exclude the actors. These enlarged details are, for the most part, still lives. This is Aura Rosenberg’s first solo exhibition with M.J. Briggs and Anna Meliksetian Gallery 313 N. Fairfax Ave Los Angeles, CA). Her work has been shown widely in the United States and Europe and is currently included in Painting Forever at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin Germany. The show opens on November 2, 2013.

Allan Gurganus '72 announces the publication of Local Souls. With this trio of linked novellas, Gurganus returns to Falls, N.C., the setting of his Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All. The New York Times says that his “vast creative and imaginative powers, still rooted in the local, are increasingly universal in scope and effect. The book is an expansive work of love…the emotional misalignments in his fiction feel both understandable and familiar… Gurganus registers an enormous amount of compassion for the characters he holds to the fire.” And Ann Patchett ’85 says “Allan Gurganus breathes so much life into the town of Falls, North Carolina, his reader is able to walk down the streets and mingle with the local souls. This book underscores what we have long known—Gurganus stands among the best writers of our time.” Gurganus is a Guggenheim Fellow and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Adaptations of his fiction have earned four Emmys.

Yaddo, the artists' community in Saratoga Springs, is under new leadership, having just elected two artists long associated with the organization, the author A.M. Homes '85 and the photographer Susan Unterberg '77, to serve as co-chairs. Homes is the author of the novel May We Be Forgiven, which was awarded the 2013 International Women’s Prize for Fiction, as well as the novels This Book Will Save Your Life, Music For Torching, The End of Alice, In a Country of Mothers, and Jack, as well as many other books. Unterberg is a New York City- based photographer whose work is in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Jewish Museum.

Derek B. Miller '92 announced that his debut His debut novel, Norwegian by Night, was released in May 2013 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The New York Times says that this extraordinary novel "has the brains of a literary novel and the body of a thriller."
Sheldon Horowitz - 82 years old, impatient, and unreasonable – is staying with his granddaughter's family in Norway when he disappears with a stranger's child. Sheldon is an ex-Marine, and he feels responsible for his son's death in Vietnam. Recently widowed and bereft, he talks to the ghosts of his past constantly. To Norway's cops, Sheldon is just an old man who is coming undone at the end of a long and hard life. But Sheldon is clear in his own mind. Sylvia Cary '57, LMFT, a Los Angeles area psychotherapist, recently published her fifth book, "The Therapist Writer: Helping Mental Health Professionals Get Published," (Timberlake Press, 2012). "Getting a book published is the quickest way for a mental health professional -- or for anyone in any profession -- to become known as an expert," she says. "However, 2013 started off with great sadness," she adds. "My lovely husband of 28 years, Lance H. Wolstrup, died on January 2. It knocked me for a loop and I'm only now beginning to get back into the world and do things such as market my book. I didn't have the heart for it until now. I'm grateful for having had a long and happy marriage, but I sure miss him and the good thing we had together."

Gay Wilgus '75 announced the publication of her book, Knowledge, Pedagogy, and Postmulticulturism: Shifting the Locus of Learning in Urban Teacher Education. This book opens for examination the research and experimental pedagogies of a teacher education faculty at a large, urban, public university, where teacher candidates from working-class and ethnic and linguistic minority backgrounds are prepared to work with learners from similar backgrounds. Gay Wilgus is Assistant Professor in the Graduate Program in Early Childhood Education at the City College of New York.

Caitlin McDonald '05 is pleased and proud to announce that my second book, a volume of collected essays titled "Belly Dance Around the World: New Communities, Performance and Identity," has just been published by McFarland press.
From Caitlin:
I am very proud to have a part in this project which I believe is a real advancement to global scholarship in dance and globalization studies. It was a real joy to work with contributors from all over the globe who each brought such insightful and unique additions to the volume.
My own contribution is on belly dance in the online game Second Life, looking at the success or failure of bodily representations of dance in a digitized format.
What most excites me about the book is that we are donating the royalties to Women for Women International, an organization dedicated to supporting women survivors of war through economic, health, and social education programs.

Eva Feder Kittay '67 of Stony Brook University and Anita Silvers '62 of San Francisco State University are the first scholars to receive the Martin R. Lebowitz and Eve Lewellis Lebowitz Prizes for Philosophical Achievement and Contribution. The prizes are awarded by Phi Beta Kappa in conjunction with the American Philosophical Association. Each winner receives an honorarium of $10,000. Kittay and Silvers will present their award-winning work during the symposium “Expanding Justice, Including Disability” at the Eastern Division American Philosophical Association this December.
Eva Kittay (pictured below) and Anita Silvers both earned bachelor’s degrees from Sarah Lawrence College in the 1960s, before a Phi Beta Kappa chapter had been established there. Kittay began college a year or two after Silvers graduated, so they did not know each other until they met later, as philosophy professors, and discovered they had a common interest in disability studies.

On December 22, 2012 Margaret Alic, Bella Brodzki, Linda Clendenin Curtis-Bey, Katy Koken, Charlene McCoin, Carol Prindle, Diane Murphy Ramo, Martha Scoppa, Estha Weiner, and Lillie Wilson ('72) held a 1968 Rothschild D Freshman Reunion at Diane's apartment in New York City. Many of us had not seen each other since 1969. This remarkable reunion brought us together from as far as Kabul, where Carol currently teaches at the American University of Afghanistan. To our great regret, Janet Woodman was missing from this special event, as was Karen Ashley, who died of ovarian cancer several years ago. It was a great celebration of our bond, our generation and the College!

T. Tara Turk's (MFA 1998) latest play, "A Falling Brooklyn Sky" was read in LA at Rogue Machine Theater, recently voted best theater in LA, as part of their playwrights' group. The play is about six peoples' transformation during the worst snowstorm NYC has ever seen.
