Fall Issue: The Meaningful Life

Fall 2014
The point of going to college—and especially of going to Sarah Lawrence—is to begin crafting a meaningful life. That means making a career, usually, but also distilling your values, understanding your strengths and weaknesses, and confronting change and loss. Easy, right? In this issue, we'll get some practical advice about how to create a life rich in meaning—no matter how you define success.

GIVE TO SLC

Fund for Sarah Lawrence - Donate today!

To all of our alumni and friends we send a warm holiday wish from your FSL team. December is a special time of the year. On the fun side, there are holiday parties and presents to enjoy and on the more somber side we bid farewell to another year. Before 2014 becomes 2015, make your contribution to your Alma mater. Feel good about your generosity and achieve a tax deduction as well. Contributions to the Fund are also gifts to you, for as we know it is better to give than to receive and what better gift is there to give than the gift of an education. Giving the gift of an education to our students who embrace their passion and realize their purpose is guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit. A donation today enables you to cross "make a gift to SLC" off your New Year's resolution list. As you count down the 12 days of Christmas the FSL team counts up our number of generous alumni donors. Before you trim your tree or light your menorah, you can mail your contribution to the 2015 Fund for Sarah Lawrence to 1 Mead Way/Bronxville, NY 10708; call us [Jody, Indra, Kin, Elizabeth & Adrianna] at 914-395-2533 or donate on line at www.sarahlawrence.edu/giveThe FSL team is grateful for your dedication to and support of Sarah Lawrence. Happy Holidays and a very Happy and Healthy New Year!

Alumni, Parents, and Friends Enjoy Tour of Cuba with Dean Jerrilynn Dodds

34 alumni, parents, and friends of Sarah Lawrence College explored Havana and other areas of Cuba with Dean of the College Jerrilynn Dodds serving as faculty host. Traveling under a special license provided by the United States Treasury Department, the group enjoyed a glimpse of Cuba through the eyes of its people. Highlights of the trip included visits to the homes and studios of local artists, guided walks through historic sites, lectures, museum tours—even a visit to students studying in the College's Havana abroad program. This trip is the latest in a growing number of international travel opportunities organized by the College's Office of Alumni Relations.

Faculty Psychologists to Study Effects of Deployment on Military Families' Lives

A new study, being conducted by Adam D. Brown, PhD and Kim T. Ferguson, PhD, psychologists at Sarah Lawrence, aims to examine whether families that know more about the events that took place in each other's lives during deployment will exhibit better psychological and behavioral well-being. Based on findings from studies of non-military families, that the researchers reviewed extensively, Brown and Ferguson say that although efforts are being made to address the psychological challenges facing military families there is a major gap in understanding how families talk to each other about the time that they were separated. Like other programs aimed at teaching skills to ease the transition to civilian life, Brown and Ferguson believe their data will inform the development of programs to help guide family conversations around this issue.

Shirley Stewart MA '10 Presented at Women's History Lecture Series

The Women's History Graduate Program presented Shirley Stewart MA '10, author of The World of Stephanie St. Clair: An Entrepreneur, Race Woman and Outlaw in Early Twentieth Century Harlem. At the age of twenty-six, Caribbean immigrant Stephanie St. Clair created and managed a highly lucrative policy bank (numbers game) in Harlem, earning a quarter of a million dollars a year. To this day, she remains the only Black female gangster to run an operation of that size. St. Clair was an entrepreneur and activist as well as a gangster. Shirley Stewart, MA '10 returned to Sarah Lawrence to share St. Clair's story and her own historical process for discovering this little known activist of the early twentieth century.

Calling SLC Alumni Visiting Florence!

Johanna Zacharias '64 writes, "We—my art historian husband Herbert Kessler (his specialty: medieval) and I—are in Florence from November 2014 to May 2015. We would happily give SLC alumni visiting the city of Dante, Giotto, Masaccio, Botticelli, et al. a personal tour of some breathtaking sites that you might miss on your own—such as the incredible Spanish Chapel in Santa Maria Novella, the church of San Miniato al Monte, and the medieval holdings of the Bargello.

"We can also give guidance on Florentine restaurants, local Tuscan specialties, and lovely, modest lodgings. And we could introduce you to our neighborhood—an urbanist's dream, which includes the incomparable Mercato di Sant'Ambrogio."

Please email Johanna at jz1234@earthlink.net.
