COMMENCEMENT

Barbara Walters and President Karen R. Lawrence

Class of 2014 graduates and some 2,000 family and friends attending Commencement were treated to a surprise appearance by alumna Barbara Walters, who announced that she is donating her archive of tapes, photographs, and papers to her alma mater. Walters recently retired from her TV show, The View. One of the world's most accomplished journalists and a true pioneer for women in news broadcasting, Walters has long been a supporter of Sarah Lawrence College. She has recently donated $1 million for student scholarships. In 2005 she donated funds for an art gallery, in the visual arts center, named in her honor. In 2001 she was the College's commencement speaker and was awarded the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Watch President Lawrence with alumna Barbara Walters.

International affairs journalist Fareed Zakaria delivered the 86th Commencement address on May 23. Having related his own journey, from young science student in India to critically-acclaimed host of CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS, to the 330 graduating seniors who earned the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and 130 graduate students receiving master's degrees, he spoke of the value of a liberal arts education in an ever-changing world. In the study, Sarah Lawrence ranks fifth among "elite colleges that have incredible pull nationwide."

The Chronicle of Higher Education published an article titled "Who Are You Calling Underprivileged?" by Natasha Rodriguez '16. Rodriguez originally wrote the piece for a nonfiction essay writing class at SLC this year.

Many thanks to Art Exhibit Curator Conrad Vogel '77 and Cabaret Director Shirley Kaplan for all of their hard work on these beloved Reunion events.

Alumni came from all over the world including Hong Kong, France, and Turkey. They also came from all over the United States. From Hawaii to California to Texas and Maine – we had the country covered! Honorary Trustee Barbara B. Cohn MA '70 and Trustee Laura G. Donnelley '69 have made important gifts to support initiatives in the sciences at Sarah Lawrence. The College is extremely grateful to both families for their thoughtfulness and dedication to Sarah Lawrence and its students.

Barbara and Bertram Cohn's generous commitment will endow a fund to support Summer Science, the College's annual 10-week undergraduate summer research program. Additionally, the gift will allow the College to purchase a new lab and field station at SLC's Center for the Urban River (CURB) to enhance opportunities for students and faculty to conduct research and conference projects in the environmental sciences.

The Donnelley Family has dedicated its gift to SLC's newly established integrated environmental studies program. Applied to meet a 2:1 match from the Mellon Foundation, it will establish the Strachan Donnelley Endowed Visiting Professorship in Environmental Writing.
