Notes from One Mead Way: SLC Alumni eNewsletter

WEB HIGHLIGHTS

Sarah Lawrence's MFA program for poetry has been singled out by The Writer as a "heavy-hitter" among national programs. In a guide to the best MFA programs for poetry in the country, The Writer highlights the program's "impressive" roster of professors, including 2014 Pulitzer Prize winner Vijay Seshadri, Matthea Harvey, and Myla Goldberg. "One of the biggest attractions of this MFA program is the amount of face time students get with faculty, thanks to bi-weekly one-on-one meetings to discuss the students' work in depth. Sarah Lawrence also hosts the largest free poetry festival in New York."

Literature faculty members Nick Mills and Fred Smoler tackle issues raised by the film, American Sniper, from different angles. In his latest opinion piece for The Daily Beast, Mills points to "The Great Gatsby," "In Our Time," and "Mrs. Dalloway" as earlier examples of classic works of fiction that address the problems soldiers face when returning home from war. In his opinion piece for 1st of the Month, Smoler argues that many of American Sniper's harshest critics have missed a number of important points about the war in Iraq to be gleaned from the film.

The poem "Fury," by writing faculty member Tina Chang, is featured in the Columbia Daily Tribune (Missouri). Chang writes about the poem: "'Fury' was the first emotion I felt when I read of the grand jury verdict regarding the Eric Garner case following on the heels of the Michael Brown case."

Geography faculty member Joshua Muldavin is interviewed in a piece for Rolling Stone concerning forced evictions in China, and the way in which a number of large American banks have financially supported Chinese real estate companies responsible for what international watchdogs have called a human rights emergency.

Thank you to everyone who has already made their donation. With three months to go to reach our $3,750,000 goal, it is still critical for alumni to contribute. The Class of 2019 will soon be formed and informed, and your contribution will support their Sarah Lawrence experience. You can embrace your passion and realize your purpose by donating online at www.slc.edu/give, mailing your contribution to the 2015 Fund for Sarah Lawrence to 1 Mead Way/Bronxville, NY 10708 or calling us at 914-395-2533 to donate by credit card. Calling SLC Alumni Visiting Florence!

Johanna Zacharias '64 writes, "We—my art historian husband Herbert Kessler (his specialty: medieval) and I—are in Florence until May 2015. We would happily give SLC alumni visiting the city of Dante, Giotto, Masaccio, Botticelli, et al. a personal tour of some breathtaking sites that you might miss on your own—such as the incredible Spanish Chapel in Santa Maria Novella, the church of San Miniato al Monte, and the medieval holdings of the Bargello.

"We can also give guidance on Florentine restaurants, local Tuscan specialties, and lovely, modest lodgings. And we could introduce you to our neighborhood—an urbanist's dream, which includes the incomparable Mercato di Sant'Ambrogio."

Please email Johanna at jz1234@earthlink.net.

Gryphons Make History!

Gryphons' history was made as Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball squared off against New Jersey Institute of Technology in SLC's first-ever contest against a NCAA Division I opponent. Unfortunately, despite taking an early seven-point lead and scoring 13 three-point field goals, Sarah Lawrence (1-24) was eventually overcome, 90-55, at Fleisher Athletic Center on Saturday.

In other news, three Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons were among the 30 student-athletes named to the Skyline All-Sportsmanship Teams for the 2014-15 Winter sports season. The honorees, Graham Gilleran '17 (Men's Basketball), Sky Mihaylo '17 (Women's Swimming), and Nick Ransom '17 (Men's Swimming) are now semifinalists to receive the 2014-15 Male & Female Sporting Awards, which will be voted on by the conference's directors of athletics at the conclusion of the academic year.

Judy Dwan Hallet '64 has been named March 2015 Filmmaker of the Month by the District of Columbia Office of Motion Picture and Television Development (MPTD). In honor of Women's History Month, MPTD applauds Judy for her lifelong contribution to the local film industry. Her latest documentary, Tale of the Tongs, follows the story of Catholic University architecture professor Travis Price and his students building an architectural memorial on the island of Inishturk, Ireland over nine days in 2013. Judy is currently completing a book on her life as a woman documentary filmmaker.

Published by Business Expert Press, Mary Vradelis '82 and Jyoti Bachani wrote the book, Strategy Making in Nonprofit Organizations, for nonprofit leaders to help them understand and communicate the management challenges that are unique to public-benefit organizations. Carla Blank '63 announced the publication of her latest book, Storming the Old Boys' Citadel. In this book, based on years of research, Carla Blank and Tania Martin "breathe new life into the lives and works of two remarkable nineteenth-century women", pioneer architects Louise Blanchard Bethune and Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart.

Amy Nawrocki '97 announced Reconnaissance, a full length poetry collection is set to be released by Homebound Publications on April 7, 2015. In her latest collection, Amy Nawrocki plays voyeur and thief, surveying canvases and investigating bookshelves, searching for creativity's origins and exploring the nature of inspiration. The poems in Reconnaissance uncover muses between the frayed pages of Byron and Shelley; in Chagall's stained glass; at Oscar Wilde's grave; past the deep bogs of Glencoe; and in the far away snow caps of Mount Fuji. In these insightful and elegant poems, Nawrocki invites us to believe in "the authenticity of first sight." Open the paint box and learn how to stare.
