Julianna Margulies '89 received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, writes Variety. The magazine reports that it wasn't until her freshman year at Sarah Lawrence College that Margulies "truly realized her calling as an actor."

 

Jeepney, the latest documentary by award-winning filmmaker Sarah Friedland '03 is set to air on PBS in May. Jeepney visualizes the richly diverse cultural and social climate of the Philippines through its most popular form of mass transportation: vividly decorated ex-WWII military vehicles.

 

Sven Hoeger received the "Going Green Award" at the 35th annual Volunteer Spirit Awards for his work at the Sarah Lawrence College Center for the Urban River at Beczak, reports The Journal News. Hoeger trains and oversees volunteers at the Center, which provides environmental education for the Hudson River community and conducts research on and monitors urban watershed issues.

 

Recognizing Sarah Lawrence for having one of the 40 best "showbiz" programs around the world, Variety praises the College's filmmaking, screenwriting, and media arts program for providing "intimate seminar and workshop environments, an expansive and comprehensive program that incorporates screenwriting and media arts, and one-on-one mentorship with faculty advisors."

 

In an opinion piece for The Observer, Nick Mills, literature faculty, suggests that Mark Twain's writings on India provide valuable lessons with which to contextualize and understand the recent riots in Baltimore.

Citation Award Winners Announced

 

Beverly Emmons '65, Dr. Charles Hoge '80 will be awarded Citations for Achievement during Reunion Weekend, which will take place June 4 - 7. The Citation for Achievement is given to a person or persons whose work embodies the values and ideals of a Sarah Lawrence education, with the understanding that there is no one yardstick for achievement.

Pauline Metcalf '60 and Stephanie Cooper '65 will be awarded Citations for Service to the College.

Amy Goodman to Speak at Graduate Commencement Ceremony

 

Amy Goodman will address the master's degree candidates at the 2015 Graduate Commencement on Thursday, May 21 at 4 p.m. on the College's South Lawn. Amy Goodman is the host and executive producer of Democracy Now!, a national, daily, independent, award-winning news program airing on over 1,300 public television and radio stations worldwide. Time Magazine named Democracy Now! its "Pick of the Podcasts," along with NBC's Meet the Press. The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard honored Goodman with the 2014 I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tovah Feldshuh to Appear in Golda's Balcony

 

In honor of the 10th Anniversary of Golda's Balcony on Broadway, alumna Tovah Feldshuh is flying up from Atlanta, where she's filming The Walking Dead to do two performances only at the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College

Come hear and see the original Broadway play with the original Broadway actress and revisit a crucial time in world history. Who knows when Tovah will be back with Golda's Balcony in NYC again.

Gryphons Season Coming to a Close

 

Sarah Lawrence College softball concluded the 2015 season by splitting its games in the 2015 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Invitational last weekend. In the semifinal, the Gryphons were defeated by top-seed St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 11-3, but SLC rebounded to win the consolation game over The College of New Rochelle, 12-3.

In other news, three Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (Softball player Kamaron McNair '18, Tennis player Adam Neufeld '15, and Volleyball player Derek Komar '15) were among the 46 student-athletes named to the Skyline All-Sportsmanship Teams for the 2015 Spring sports season. The honorees are now semifinalists to receive the 2014-15 Male & Female Sporting Awards, which will be voted on by the conference's directors of athletics at the conclusion of the academic year.

On December 29, 2014, DC Mayor-elect Bowser named Laura Green Zeilinger '95 the next Director of the Department of Human Services (DHS). Ms. Zeilinger is responsible for a 973-person agency that is charged with assisting low-income individuals and families to maximize their potential for economic security and self-sufficiency. Ms. Zeilinger is an attorney with a long-standing commitment to underserved populations.

 
   

Abigail Welhouse '09 announced the publication of BAD BABY, her first poetry chapbook, by Dancing Girl Press.

Justin Okin '03 performs in Entropy at Theatre of NOTE in Hollywood. LAist said of it, "The show really is out of this world—and also only in L.A." Entropy runs through Saturday, May 30. Tickets and showtimes are at www.theatreofnote.com.

 
   

Lev AC Rosen's (MFA 2006) second novel, Depth, a hardboiled noir set in a post-apocalyptic New York came out from Regan Arts, Judith Regan's new imprint, this past April.

Eunyup Yeom '14 announced that she presented her conference paper, written during her senior year at Sarah Lawrence, entitled Engendered Noises: The Politics of Sensorial Pleasure in Neoliberal Korean Food Commercials at the International Linguistics Association 2015 Conference.
