Then and Now
Spring 2015

It's bound to happen. Once set in motion, a story unfolds in ways we don't expect and could never foresee. People enter and exit. Seemingly unrelated events impose on the narrative arc. Just like that, a plot line that began way back then becomes a rich, complex tale that continues in the here and now, as the stories in this issue will attest.

Spotlight on Generosity in Our Community

Naomi Bernhard Levinson '56 provided seed money to create and endow the Health Advocacy Fund, which will support the Health Advocacy program and its financial needs for expert guest lecturers, student professional development and capstone projects, and communications to build awareness of the program to the health advocacy, alumni, and broader communities.

Janet Ciriello '59 and her husband Nicholas Ciriello made a thoughtful gift towards scholarships and financial aid. Every year, the Janet and Nicholas Ciriello Endowed Scholarship Fund will help one student with financial need gain access to a Sarah Lawrence education.

On September 30, the Graduate Writing Program launched the John and Penny Barr Poetry Reading Series featuring award-winning poet Joshua Mehigan, MFA '94. We are grateful to our Bronxville neighbors John and Penny Barr for establishing a poetry reading series at the College. A poet, John Barr is the former president of the Poetry Foundation and a former faculty member of the Sarah Lawrence MFA program. Penny Barr is the former Project Manager for Children's Poetry at the Foundation where she created and established the Children's Poet Laureate. The series celebrates the ever-changing art of contemporary poetry by bringing notable poets, both prominent and emerging to read at the College. The next reading on March 2, 2016 will feature Sarah Lindsay, author of four books of poetry and recipient of the 2012 Carolyn Kizer prize, a Lannan Literary Fellowship, and a Pushcart prize.
