Author A.M. Homes '85 and photographer Susan Unterberg '77 have been named co-chairs of the Board of Yaddo, an artists' community located in Saratoga Springs, New York.

 

Music faculty member Matt Wilson is the cover story of JazzTimes' 2013-2014 Jazz Education Guide.

 

In The Washington Post Books section, Writing faculty member Melvin Bukiet reviews The Collaboration: Hollywood's Pact with Hitler by Ben Urwand.

 

The New York Times reports that Fools: Stories by Writing faculty member Joan Silber is on the long list of fiction nominees for the National Book Award. Silber was a 2004 National Book Award finalist for Ideas of Heaven: A Ring of Stories.

 

For the second year in a row, the Sarah Lawrence Chapter of the American Chemical Society received an Honorable Mention Chapter Award from the Society's Committee on Education.

 
Kamden Hilliard '16 was named a national semifinalist in the 2013 Norman Mailer College Writing Award for Poetry.
 

Delanceyplace is daily email with a noteworthy excerpt, offered with commentary to provide context. Recently, Delanceyplace showcased Girls Like Us by Sheila Weller, which discusses, in part, Carly Simon '65 as a student at Sarah Lawrence College.

Writing Institute expands noncredit classes in Bronxville and NYC

THE WRITING INSTITUTE presents Show Me the Money: Writing Award-Winning Grants for the Arts, a 2-day workshop at the Center for Continuing Education conducted by Philanthropy expert Suzanne Grossberg on Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20, 10 am-3 pm.

This course is designed for writers, artists, teachers and nonprofit professionals at all levels of experience who want to develop and write successful grant applications for foundations, corporations and government agencies. Students will learn how to research, review and analyze grant guidelines and write a 2-page fundable proposal.

Suzanne Grossberg has a 23-year history of raising millions of dollars for the arts, education and research. She is currently president and CEO of her own consulting company and has helped numerous nonprofits with strategic planning, board recruitment, fundraising/PR campaign development, grants research and writing, and event planning and execution.

Official Opening of the Sarah Lawrence College Center for the Urban River at Beczak (CURB)  

Members of our community celebrated the official opening of the Sarah Lawrence College Center for the Urban River at Beczak (CURB) at a reception for faculty, staff and members of the board of directors of the Hudson Valley Environmental Education Institute (with whom we formed the alliance to establish the Center) on Tuesday, October 1 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

The Center for the Urban River at Beczak, an academic research facility, is located on the banks of the Hudson River at Habirshaw Park, and features a welcoming riverfront lawn, an easily accessible tidal marsh, and a beach used for river exploration and seining. Sarah Lawrence College and the launch of the Center for the Urban River at Beczak will provide a broad educational platform, establish a Hudson River research program, and incorporate service learning and citizen science projects in the Yonkers community.

Friends of the Library Luncheon and Author's Reading

 

The Friends of the Library are having a luncheon and author's reading on November 7. Richard Snow is the author of I Invented the Modern Age: the Rise of Henry Ford. He was editor of American Heritage Magazine for 17 years

This luncheon takes place Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 12:00p.m. at Siwanoy Country Club, Pondfield Road, Bronxville. $35 per person. Two Alumni Athletes Profiled

 

Liz Stitzel '09 was a standout equestrian rider in her college days, and recently she embarked on a rare opportunity to continue competing for the Gryphons, years after finishing her degree. As a part of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Alumni Division, Stitzel joined hundreds of riders who continue to compete well after finishing their undergraduate career.Liz Stitzel '09 was named IHSA National Champion in the Alumni Equitation on the Flat class; Second Place in Alumni Equitation over Fences. Myles Alexander '10 competed for the US in ITU (International Triathlon Union) championships In London. He finished fourth for the US and 23rd in the world in his age group. Myles's amazing rise to prominence in the sport almost didn't happen, because of his struggle with anorexia. Read his full profile here.

Derek B. Miller '92 announced that his debut novel, Norwegian by Night, was released in May 2013 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The New York Times says that this extraordinary novel "has the brains of a literary novel and the body of a thriller."

Sculptor Lowell Miller '70 will be part of an upcoming art exhibit in Woodstock, NY. Ingenious Art Group Productions, which curates art exhibits and organizes art shows/fairs/etc, is holding a 2-day art shopping weekend this fall in Woodstock, NY, 90 miles north of midtown Manhattan. The event centers around an artist studio tour on Saturday, Oct 26th. Lowell Miller is among nine artists that have all been pre-selected by IAG.

Susan Duff '67 announced her essay, "Moving Through Water," won first prize in Dan's Papers Annual Literary Nonfiction Essay contest several weeks ago. "Moving Through Water" is an excerpt from Susan's memoir in progress about swimming with her husband during his recovery from a complication of hip surgery. Dan's Papers is a local newspaper in East Hampton, NY.
