Liza Ketchum Publishes New Novel

Viking just published Liza Ketchum's new novel, "Newsgirl." She'll be doing a reading on October 27th (at 7 p.m.), at Porter Square Books in Cambridge, MA

Weaving in details of authentic 19th century California, Liza Ketchum has written a fascinating story of San Francisco at the height of its rough and tumble days. Amelia's family has arrived in San Francisco in 1851, hoping for a new life in this gold rush town. But they are nearly penniless. Amelia discovers that newsboys can make a fortune selling east coast newspapers. So, she cuts her hair and dresses herself as a boy and experiences a new freedom as she explores the city.

Amelia is a well-rounded character: imperfect, persistent, unsure of herself, and likable. "An educational and entertaining read".--School Library Journal (starred review) Newsgirl is recommended for grades 5 to 8.

Ketchum is the author of many books for young readers, including Where the Great Hawk Flies, winner of the Massachusetts Book Award for Children's Literature. She enjoys writing nonfiction and contemporary novels as well as stories about the past. She teaches in the MFA program in Writing for Children and Young Adults at Hamline University and divides her time between Massachusetts and Vermont.

Ryan Gates takes CreativeRHINO on the road as true digital nomads

A month-long mobile office campaign to prove that America’s idea of business has drastically changed, giving way to an era of digital nomads.

September 21st, 2009 – Bolton Landing, NY – Bolton Landing-based company CreativeRHINO has packed up and taken to the road for a month-long trip of being completely mobile. The primarily husband and wife team have brought everything they need for the first of two back-to-back month-long trips across America for business, pleasure, and art.

The trip will explore how the company operates entirely from the road with no home base to fallback on while maintaining full functionality. As well, it is a social experiment on a business’s connections to an office space and location; can a business be successful by being a digital nomad and merging business with home life?

Emma Gaalaas Mullaney '07 Announces First Academy Publication

Emma Gaalaas Mullaney '07 just received notice of her first academic publication: Journal of Latin American Geography, Volume 8, Number 2, 2009

Abstract: Based on a study of the semi-autonomous Carib Territory of Dominica, this article proposes that access to the land be thought of in terms of land security, a concept that bridges productive, cultural, and political dimensions of the land. Interviews revealed an identification with the land deeper than issues of ownership usually address and at odds with proposals for individual and collective land titling. The consideration of land security is offered as a way to expand our disciplinary language to fit indigenous realities, by connecting the adjudication of property rights directly to the heritage and environmental rights of residents.
