Dania Beach Artist Claire Jeanine Satin '56 was honored with an exhibition on May 17 in Venice, Italy at Galleria 3Din Mestre. The title of the well-attended exhibit was “Indeterminacy”. The Post-Modern artist is completing a 2nd Emily Harvey Foundation Artist Residency in Venice. The Emily Harvey Foundation offers residencies in Venice, Italy, for innovative artists, writers, musicians videographers, dancers and other creative thinkers in mid to late career. Robert Sampson '10 received the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals Fellowship. The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals is a full-year work-study scholarship program with a strong focus on cultural exchange. CBYX annually provides 75 young Americans with an understanding of everyday life, education, and professional training in Germany. The program begins in July and includes two months of intensive German language training in Germany (no prior German language knowledge required), four months of classroom instruction at a German university or college of applied sciences, and a five-month internship in a participant's career field.

Chris Brandt MFA 1972 invites you you to a rare chance to see John Gay's satirical romp, The Beggar's Opera, done in its original spirit, as a folk opera that lampoons "high" art, operatic pretensions, and society's hypocrisies - a real beggar's opera, done in the tradition of poor theatre from Gay to Grotowski - but unlike the latter, hilariously funny. Medicine Show is one of New York City's oldest experimental theatre companies, which has done everything from Shakespeare to Havel and Fo, Aristophanes to their own collaboratively created pieces (which have won several international prizes.)

New York Times featured an article on the creation of the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space in the East Village. Laurie Mittelmann '11 is actively involved in this effort to preserve and share the story of how activists took over abandoned properties and transformed them into permanent housing or community gardens. Laurie came up with this idea for the museum with Bill DiPaola, executive director of an environmental group, Time's Up, whose members participated in demonstrations to preserve community gardens and squats.

Winner of the Walt Whitman Award 2011, Elana Bell '99 MFA '08, invites you to the launch of her collection of poems entitled “Eyes, Stones” about the Palestine/Israel conflict. The launch will take place at Green Building in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn on Thursday, May 3rd, 2012. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the performance begins at 8pm. The evening will feature ten local artists who have created original pieces of art in response to the poems from the manuscript. A silent auction will be held for the art and all proceeds will be donated to Just Vision, an organization that provides in-depth media coverage of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and civilians working for a just peace in the region. The event will also debut a theatrical version of the text from the book, featuring live music by Katie Down and choreography by Deborah Goffe of Scapegoat Garden, which will be performed subsequently at Jewish and Muslim community centers in Brooklyn (funded by The Brooklyn Arts Council).

Pressler quickly attained international fame in 1946 by winning the Debussy Competition in San Francisco. Gray Henry Blakemore ’65 for her work, through her publishing foundation Fons Vitae, producing translations of a 40-volume work by a medieval Islamic scholar, Abu Hamid al-Ghazali. English readers have long been at a disadvantage in studying the political philosophy of Confucius. Chinese readers have always had access to an extensive commentary concerning its meaning and import, both by reading his own original source documents and by having available the writings of the major and minor commentators who followed Confucius. In order to provide English readers with similar access, David R. Schiller ‘66 has completed an exhaustive, 1,650 page translation, commentary and interpretation of Discussions/Conversations, or The Analects [Lun-yu] entitled, CONFUCIUS: Discussions/Conversations. In addition to the translation, the two volumes contain a short review of early Chinese history, a life of Confucius, chronologies of major events in both the early history and in his life, and a concordance of key Chinese characters which have been transliterated into English. Press Play named Big Tree's debut as one of its top 10 albums of 2011. Their self-titled album was the first full-length CD from an erstwhile East Coast indie pop band fronted by singer-songwriter Kaila McIntyre-Bader '09. Nancy Boas '55 announced that her biography, David Park: A Painter's Life, is being published by the University of California Press in February. David Park was the originator and leader of Bay Area figurative art, which came to prominence in the 1950s. Nancy always loved Park's work and the fact that he influenced so many artists in his time and continues to do so today inspired her to undertake the story of his life. Also, on the cover of the University of California Press spring 2012 catalogue is a beautiful Park painting belonging to Jane Bolles Grimm '65, that is illustrated in the book.

Sara Starr Wolff '52 has been on a local book tour promoting her book, Vital Aging: Seven Year of building Community and Enhancing Health (www.vitalagingbook.com). Based on a therapy/support group she led when she was a psychologist at a medical center, the book describes in the members’ own words how they found each other their best resource when it came to information about aging. The members felt a responsibility to share what they had learned from each other. The book, based on their meetings, is a valuable resource for raising the level of awareness of health-care providers, gerontologists, and anyone else who spends time with elders.

Rosalind Brenner MFA 2009 announced the success of Poetry Against Hunger. Rosalind shared, "This was an amazing poetry reading for the benefit of our local food pantry. It featured Mark Doty and George Wallace as well as other poets, including myself, whose poems are in the anthology, 'Broken Circles,' published by Cave Moon Press for the sole purpose of raising funds and food for hungry people. It was hugely successful. We collected pounds of food and about $700. I was so joyous to have had the opportunity to produce the reading."

Rosalind also announced Possibilities/Energy Paintings. This is an art show of paintings and collage that will run for the entire spring semester at the Esther Raushenbush Library Gallery. Opening reception in March to be announced. Included will be the painting featured at the graduation of the class of 2009 program, invitations and tickets.

Jane Trigere '70 announces Women of the Balcony Art Exhibit, which runs from October 30th through February 5th. At the opening, Jane will talk about her four pieces that memorialize the women of a closed synagogue in upper Manhattan. All that was left in the women's balcony were rows of individually hand-made cushions. The remnants of German Jewry used fabric remnants to mark their place... in life and in death. Janet Kaplan MFA 1995 announces her third book, Dreamlife of a Philanthropist, a collection of prose poems and sonnets. The book is the 2011 winner of the Ernest Sandeen prize in poetry. She is the author of two previous prize-winning poetry collections, The Groundnote and The Glazier’s Country, and her poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. Danielle Conover '06 and husband Dan Griffiths founded CLOWNZERO, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving life for children and communities worldwide through humanitarian clowning and therapeutic performing arts. CLOWNZERO is currently in residence at UCSF Children's Hospital with their HEALING THROUGH HUMOR Program.

In January 2012, CLOWNZERO will be teaming up with THE PANYA PROJECT: A Permaculture Education Center in Chiang Mai Thailand for a 1-week workshop in therapeutic clowning culminating in a visit to local schools, orphanages and hospitals.

Gary Ploski MFA 2008 just won best acting honors for the short film, Objects of Time. The film was part of the 48 Hour Film Project, in which the filmmakers have exactly that much time to create a movie from start to finish. Objects of Time also won for Best Film, Best Directing, Best Writing, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and, of course, it also received the Audience Award.

Jon Grinspan '06 is currently a PhD Candidate studying American History at the University of Virginia. He has two publications coming out. The first is an academic study of popular comedy during the Civil War, which relies on both literary humorists and the comedy of average Americans. "Sorrowfully Amusing": The Popular Comedy of the Civil War appears in the Journal of the Civil War Era. The second, Miscellaneous Food in a Feverish Haste, is a short piece in the food history journal Gastronomica, which looks into the changing role of lunch and eating houses in late 19th century American cities.

Its mission is to make real food the norm, not the exception. Live Real is launching its first of two Food & Freedom Rides. The first ride, from August 7 - 18, will have Live Real staff and Real Food Fellows travel in a van from Birmingham, Alabama to Detroit, Michigan, to investigate how people on the front lines of the food system are surviving and thriving with some alternative choices. The second ride, from August 26 - September 2nd, will traverse America's "salad bowl", California.

In 1963, Hope Cooke '62 married the last Chogyal of Sikkim and became the Queen of Sikkim during the final years of the kingdom. Cooke's friend, Alice Kandell '60 became a frequent visitor to the kingdom and, at the Chogyal's request, embarked on a project to document the way of life in Sikkim. Photos of Sikkim from 1965-1971 by Kandell are now online at the Library of Congress.

The U.S. Embassy of Cairo selected Mark Bain's ('90) band, the Ayme Loren Band, from 600 bands through ShareTheMic.com program to perform with two other well known Egyptian bands in performances in Cairo and Alexandria, and to conduct cultural exchange workshops with Egyptian children. See the announcement by ShareTheMic, the organization who presented Mark's band to the Embassy. Also, the U.S. Embassy of Cairo's Facebook page has lots of posted media -- both pictures and concert footage, from the Ayme Loren Band's tour.

"Legendary" Maine film editor Mary Lampson '67 will be "special guest" at this year's Maine International Film Festival. Lampson and director Anne Makepeace will present their 2010 documentary film, "We Still Live Here (As Nutayunean)", about the cultural revival by the Wampanoag of southeastern Massachusetts. Matt Matros MFA 2004 took home $303,501 and his second gold bracelet from the World Series of Poker (WSOP) after winning the $2,500 Mixed Hold’em (Limit/No-Limit) event in Las Vegas on Saturday. Matros, a 34-year-old pro poker player, had previously won the $1,500 Limit Hold’em event last year.
