The New York Times reports that a bluegrass band of Sarah Lawrence students performed in the city's Untermyer Gardens on the first Yonkers Arts Weekend.

 

President Karen Lawrence recently sat down for a conversation with Dan Berrett of The Chronicle of Higher Education to discuss Sarah Lawrence's newly created method of assessment, which is designed to ensure that students possess the critical abilities necessary for success upon graduation and beyond.

 

Variety reports that Eric Dufault '10 has been announced as the 2014-15 recipient of the Playwrights of New York (PoNY) Fellowship, an award created to provide promising emerging playwrights with the financial freedom to create new plays.

 

Alumna Barbara Walters is profiled in an April 8 article in Variety. Walters, whom the magazine calls "the woman who shattered the glass ceiling of TV news," announced recently that she will retire in May.

Last week we welcomed the month of May. Following more than four weeks of April's showers, we are delighted to greet this new month at Sarah Lawrence. With the 31 days of May comes conference week for all our students, move out day on May 16 for all underclass students, and Commencement on May 23 for our seniors. For alumni and The Fund for Sarah Lawrence, May brings the end of the fiscal and Fund year on May 31. So though we've just passed Teacher Appreciation Day on May 6, you can still make a donation to the Fund in honor or memory of your favorite SLC professor or don. The perfect gift for moms on Mother's Day on May 11 is a donation to your alma mater in their honor. In honor of Graduation on May 23, you can make a contribution in tribute to the students of the Class of 2014. Regardless of when in May you make your gift it will be put to use immediately providing student scholarships, faculty resources, and campus enhancements. Citation Award Winners Announced

 

Laura Pat Svetkey '74, Margaret Shepherd '69, and Rhoda (Rosen) Redleaf '54 will be awarded citations during Reunion Weekend, which will take place June 5 - 8. The Citation for Achievement is given to a person or persons whose work embodies the values and ideals of a Sarah Lawrence education, with the understanding that there is no one yardstick for achievement.

The David Fontana Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

 

Sarah Lawrence College is grateful to Marian Goldstein Fontana '89 who established an endowed scholarship fund in memory of her husband David Fontana, a firefighter who died with his company, Squad 1 in Brooklyn, at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. David held a fine arts degree in sculpture, and in an earlier part of his life worked as a set designer for Sarah Lawrence, to be close to Marian while she pursued her education at the College. In addition to his wife, David Fontana is survived by their son Aidan.

Marian is a writer, blogger, and performer. Along with SLC Trustee Tracey Riese '79, she has been named to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's transition team, to serve on the team's sub-committee on arts and culture. Marian will be celebrating her 25th Reunion this June with the Class of 1989.

The 86th annual Sarah Lawrence College Commencement ceremony will take place on Friday, May 23, at 10 a.m. Fareed Zakaria, host of CNN's flagship international affairs program, Fareed Zakaria GPS, editor-at-large of TIME magazine, a Washington Post columnist, and a New York Times bestselling author, will deliver the Commencement address. Sarah Lawrence Professor wins Pulitzer Prize for Poetry

 

Sarah Lawrence College professor Vijay Seshadri has won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Vijay Seshadri was awarded the prize for his "3 Sections," which the Pulitzer committee described as "a compelling collection of poems that examine human consciousness, from birth to dementia, in a voice that is by turns witty and grave, compassionate and remorseless." Vijay read and talked about his poetry on the April 30 edition of The Brian Lehrer Show.

Congratulations to our 2014 Guggenheim Fellows

 

Two faculty members were Guggenheim recipients this year: Victoria Redel is a fiction recipient and Rachel Cohen is a nonfiction recipient. Victoria Redel is the author of the novels The Border of Truth (2008) and Loverboy (2001), and of  two collections of short fiction: Make Me Do Things (2014) and Where the Road Bottoms Out (1995). She is also the author of three award-winning collections of poetry: Woman Without Umbrella (2013), Swoon (2003), and Already the World (1995). Rachel Cohen is an essayist and cultural critic, who writes about history, literature, and the arts.  Her essays have appeared in the New Yorker, Guardian, London Review of Books, New York Times, Threepenny Review, Believer, and McSweeney's, and have been anthologized in the Pushcart Prize Anthology and in Best American Essays.

"SLCeeds: Ideas, Innovation, Inspiration" wins award for Best Practices in Career Services

 

The Office of Career Services at Sarah Lawrence College has been awarded a first place Alva C. Cooper Award for Best Practices in Career Services for their program, "SLCeeds: Ideas, Innovation, Inspiration." Director Angela Cherubini and SLCeeds Entrepreneurship & Innovation Program Coordinator Jennifer Stam will present this program at the spring meeting of the Metropolitan New York College Career Planning Officer's Association (MNYCCPOA) on May 2 at St. John's University, Queens Campus. The Office of Career Services offers a broad range of career services that empower students to explore, define, and realize their career goals.

SLC Summer Programs from the Center for Continuing Education

 

The Center for Continuing Education is offering a wide range of exciting courses for elementary school, high school, college students, as well as adults. Registration for our noncredit summer Writing Institute classes is open and classes are starting to fill. From Food Writing to Humor Writing, to our short Fiction Writing Intensive, or the One Day Publish and Promote your Book conference, there is something for writers of all levels.

The Center for Continuing Education is also offering a broad range of noncredit and pre-college and college credit courses this summer. Courses include theater, film, literature, writing, ecology, Arabic, and more. See summer course descriptions.

'Selfies' Explores Bullying in the Age of Social Media

 

The Journal News featured an article on Selfies, an original touring play for high school students by Joshua Langman '14, Charlotte Cwikowski '16, Nikolas Vagenas '16, Raquel Loving '16, and Nahome Diribssa '17. Selfies follows four teens as they navigate the pitfalls of digital friendships, cope with cyberbullying, and discover new ways to take ownership of their lives.

SLC Student-Athlete Named a 2014 Equestrian Foundation Scholarship Winner

 

Sarah Lawrence College rider Emma Nogami '16 has been named a 2014 Intercollegiate Equestrian Foundation Scholarship Winner. In addition, Nogami joins nine other Gryphons who have been named to the 2013-14 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association All-Academic Team. Award winners were announced in conjunction with the IHSA National Championships at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex, May 1-4. Nogami is one of 23 riders in the country to be selected for an IEF Scholarship. She was selected from among the IHSA's more than 400 teams and 6,500 hunter-seat riders.

Riley Strom '13 recently opened an art gallery in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn. The space is a converted old 99 Cents Store, and more than 500 people attended the opening. The show sold out all of the art that was exhibited. She has been added as a part of the Brooklyn Art Walk at the end of May.

In the April 13 issue of The New York Times Style Magazine, David Netto '92 writes about interior design, encouraging readers to consider real life when choosing a design style.

 
   

Red Monsoon, directed by the young director Eelum Dixit '09, is set to be released on May 9 in various cinema halls around Nepal. Based on an unpublished short story, Sharan, by Karuna Sharma, the film explores the entangled lives of its three protagonists—Krishna, Chetana and Karuna, set against the backdrop of the Rato Macchendranath festival. Director Dixit studied stage and film acting and directing at SLC. Other SLC connections include producer Ruth Moe and faculty member Douglas MacHugh MFA 2000. The director of photography is Brian Emery '07, the technical director of the Filmmaking, Screenwriting & Media Arts at SLC.

 
   

Yvonne Sangudi '10, a young entrepreneur, was interviewed by Huffington Post about her career in music. While she was a student at SLC, Yvonne interned with Sony Music and NBC, and then moved out to CA after receiving a full time offer from NBC. She then started her own record label. She's also launching a clothing line. Yvonne Sangudi is also a world-class singer. She has sung for former first lady Laura Bush, President Kikwete (Tanzania), and President Sirleaf (Liberia).

 
   

Eva F. Kittay '67 (and former faculty) was chosen as a 2014 Guggenheim Fellow. Eva Feder Kittay is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Stony Brook University, SUNY, and a Senior Fellow of the Stony Brook Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics. Her pioneering work, interjecting questions of care and disability (especially cognitive disability) into philosophy, and her work in feminist theory have garnered a number of honors and prizes.
