Spring Issue: The Heart of Music

Spring 2014
The song you listened to obsessively while getting over a breakup. The eerie background music in your favorite TV drama. The exuberant Afro-pop that makes you dance all night. How, exactly, do these songs work their magic? In this issue, performers, composers, and listeners explore the many ways we make meaning through music.

GIVE TO SLC

Fund for Sarah Lawrence - Donate today!

Back to School. This three word statement has only one true meaning but invokes many different feelings. As alumni many of you can breathe a sigh of relief that it does not mean coming back to long sleepless nights of reading 1,000 page books or writing 100 page conference papers. Sadly it also means not getting a chance to see all your Sarah Lawrence friends or your SLC professors. Of course, you are always welcome to attend the events and programs we have on campus and you may even run into a professor or your don. The campus has woken from a slight summer slumber and it is abuzz with new and returning students. The Class of 2018 is enjoying opening week mostly because of the generosity of our alumni and parent donors. We at The FSL hope to make 2015 our best fund raising year ever: to continue to ensure the high quality of future classes. Your participation is the key! Please donate at whatever level is comfortable for you, and join us in the 2015 Fund. Your donations work together to provide essential resources for all students and our brilliant faculty.

You can mail your contribution to the 2014 Fund for Sarah Lawrence to 1 Mead Way/Bronxville, NY 10708; call us [Jody, Indra, Kin, Elizabeth & Adrianna] at 914-395-2533 or donate on line at www.sarahlawrence.edu/give. The FSL team is grateful for your investment in and support of your alma mater.

Philip Shenon, bestselling author, to speak on September 30 in Donnelley Lecture Hall

Presenting intriguing research and insight into the questions that have haunted the nation since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy: Was the President killed by a single gunman? Was Lee Harvey Oswald part of a conspiracy? Philip Shenon, author of the 2013 bestseller A Cruel and Shocking Act: The Secret History of the Kennedy Assassination, asserts in his in-depth account of the Warren Commission that the panel of seven august men did not discover the whole truth of what happened on November 22, 1963.

On Tuesday, September 30 at 5:30 p.m., Shenon will speak about his research and his unprecedented access to surviving commission staff members and other key players that contributed to his quest to uncover the mysteries of one of this country's darkest days. The lecture, to be held in the Donnelley Lecture Hall in the Heimbold Visual Arts Center, is free and open to the public. Shuttle service will be available from the College's parking lots.
