A new study to be conducted by faculty psychologists aims to examine whether families that know more about the events that took place in each other's lives during deployment will exhibit better psychological and behavioral wellbeing. Based on findings from studies of non-military families, the faculty researchers, Adam D. Brown, PhD and Kim T. Ferguson, PhD, say that although efforts are being made to address the psychological challenges facing military families, there exists a strong need to better understand the mechanisms that underlie resilience and vulnerability to mental health issues among families in which a parent was deployed to a warzone.

NCAA Approves Acceleration of SLC Membership

The National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Management Council has announced that Sarah Lawrence College has been approved to enter its fourth and final year of provisional membership, effective Sept. 1, 2014. SLC applied for and was granted a waiver to consolidate Year Three and Year Four of the transition. SLC's waiver was approved on the basis of "compelling evidence" that the College is meeting the expectations of the NCAA.

"We have proven our commitment to providing top-quality athletic programs that complement the rigors of the SLC academic experience," explains Director of Athletics and Physical Education Kristin Maile. "We are thrilled that the NCAA has recognized the continued efforts and dedication of our student-athletes, administrators, faculty and staff."

Alexis Coe '09 announced that her first book will be published in October. The book follows a case she discovered while a student at SLC. In 1892, America was obsessed with a teenage murderess, but it wasn't her crime that shocked the nation—it was her motivation. Nineteen- year-old Alice Mitchell had planned to pass as a man in order to marry her seventeen-year-old fiancée Freda Ward, but when their love letters were discovered, they were forbidden from ever speaking again. Alice + Freda Forever recounts this tragic, real-life love story with over 100 illustrated love letters, maps, artifacts, historical documents, newspaper articles, courtroom proceedings, and intimate, domestic scenes—painting a vivid picture of a sadly familiar world.
