Acclaimed writer, producer and director Helen Whitney '65 explores the applications and limitations of the concept and practice of forgiveness through a compelling range of stories, from personal betrayal to global reconciliation after genocide in her new PBS film, Forgiveness: A Time to Love and a Time to Hate. Divided into two 90-minute acts, the film airs Sundays, April 17 and 24 at 10 p.m. ET on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings). “Forgiveness is elusive, mysterious, primal … an idea and an ache, which is rooted in existential concerns. But too often forgiveness is presented as a simplistic valentine celebrating New Age pieties: exhorting us to forgive and criticizing those who cannot as spiritual underachievers,” notes Whitney. “My intention is to complicate this vitally important subject. The film is meant to raise questions, not provide answers.”

Join photographer Kay Chernush '66 this summer for a unique photo workshop in beautiful southwestern France. From our relaxing base in Le Brouilh-Monbert, an hour west of Toulouse, you will have an opportunity to discover the many charms of this relatively un-touristed region. Learn how to use your camera as a way into a different culture, how to make pictures rather than take them, how to make your own good luck. Technical issues will be addressed as they arise, but the emphasis will be on making great photos by broadening the ways in which you see and connect with your subjects, thereby enriching your experience of places both familiar and unfamiliar. You will have plenty of opportunity to practice your French with our gracious hosts, who will make you feel immediately at home in their charmingly restored 18th century manor house. Spouses and companions are welcome at a reduced rate. Sunday, July 17 - Saturday, July 23. Cost is $2,500 for 5-day workshop; 6 nights, shared double room; all meals, wine, aperitifs; and much much more. Details at:

2010 brought the official release of "Thinktankubator," the first full-length release on Summer Break Records by Allan Hayslip '91 under the band name Bonedome, and the reviews are strong. Magnet Magazine wrote "Hayslip's vocals are like those of a young Bowie, but the music has an appeal similar to the Hives. Friend Lisa Loeb sent a note saying "Very moody, rock, interesting, complicated, but like reading a book." Former fellow SLC'er Rhett Miller '93 (of the Old 97's) wrote "Thinktankubator reminds me of some of my favorite records without ever seeming derivative." And BabySue.Com said 'Instantly impressive stuff...We can hear traces of a wide range of folks while spinning this disc... but specific artists that come to mind include David Bowie, The Psychedelic Furs, and Peter Murphy.... Twelve cool heady tracks." All the usual online suspects are carrying "Thinktankubator" as a CD or download, or at rare live Bonedome shows.
