Paige Perkins '83 announces a new exhibit, "Diving into the Wreck", which runs from May 27 through June 26 at the Meter Room in England. This inaugural exhibition is the culmination of Paige Perkins' 8 week artist residency during the renovation of Meter Room's project space and studios. "Diving into the Wreck", which takes its title from an Adrienne Rich poem of the same name, features several site-specific responses to the Meter Room's premises – a derelict 1960's City Council office block which formerly housed the Coventry Volunteer Service Council. Gerard LaFemina '90, an assistant professor in the Frostburg State University Department of English, was honored at the spring meeting of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents with the Regents' Faculty Award for Public Service. The USM Regents' Faculty Award is the highest honor that the Board bestows to recognize exemplary faculty achievement. LaFemina's honor marks the fourth time in the past five years that an FSU faculty member has been honored by the Regents.

Acclaimed writer, producer and director Helen Whitney '65 explores the applications and limitations of the concept and practice of forgiveness through a compelling range of stories, from personal betrayal to global reconciliation after genocide in her new PBS film, Forgiveness: A Time to Love and a Time to Hate. Divided into two 90-minute acts, the film airs Sundays, April 17 and 24 at 10 p.m. ET on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings). “Forgiveness is elusive, mysterious, primal … an idea and an ache, which is rooted in existential concerns. But too often forgiveness is presented as a simplistic valentine celebrating New Age pieties: exhorting us to forgive and criticizing those who cannot as spiritual underachievers,” notes Whitney. “My intention is to complicate this vitally important subject. The film is meant to raise questions, not provide answers.”

Artist and writer Benjamin Blackburn '86 and historian and author Leslie Heaphy are currently organizing the 2011 Jerry Malloy Negro Art Contest. They welcome art entries on "Black Baseball Heroes" on any level of experience: professional, amateur, and youth (under 16). In addition to receiving a prize of $400, the winning entry of each category will have their art displayed during the conference at the National Art Museum of Sport on July 21-24, 2011. Laura Zeilinger '95 joined the U.S. Inter-agency council on Homelessness team as the new Regional Coordinator Team Leader. In this position, Laura will be responsible for providing direction, guidance and support to the Regional Coordinators on the strategic implementation of Opening Doors. As a Team Leader, she will also be responsible for overseeing this strategic approach to the states and local communities, and deploying Regional Coordinator resources consistent with full implementation of the Federal Strategic Plan.

As part of Genetic Alliance's 25th Anniversary celebration, Robin Bennett MS '84 will receive the Art of Listening Award. Robin is Senior Genetic Counselor and Co-Director of the Genetic Medicine Clinic at the University of Washington. In addition to her clinical work, she has been a pioneer in the development of genetic counseling practice recommendations, including developing criteria for pedigree nomenclature that are now the world standard. She has also taught high school, undergraduate, graduate, and medical students about genetics issues. Furthermore, she gives her time and expertise to advocacy organizations because she values their contributions to science and public policy as well as to the lives of individuals and families with genetic conditions.
In addition, tune in to view Diane Baker MS '79 in the latest installment of the Innovator Series. This series showcases individuals who have contributed substantially to innovation in the health and genetics community. Diane obtained a master's in Human Genetics from Sarah Lawrence College and went on to establish the Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling at the University of Michigan. Con Artist Gallery is pleased to present Queens-based artist Heidi Howard's '08 first solo exhibition in New York City. This exhibition of new work entitled Painting for Love opens on February 2nd and runs through February 26, 2011. The paintings on view represent Howard's work from the past three years. For the past four years she has been concerned with political and psychological significance of the body in space. These works mark a shift from paintings about New York City to portraits of her female friends, and small abstract works deeply involved in pattern and texture.

Brian J. O'Connor '82, personal finance columnist for The Detroit News, has been named winner of the Christopher J. Welles Memorial Prize at Columbia University. Conferred by Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism, the Welles Memorial Prize is awarded to the story or series by a former fellow that best reflects business and financial sophistication as well as traditional journalistic skills of thorough reporting, good storytelling and timeliness. O'Connor, a Knight-Bagehot Fellow from the class of 2001, was honored for his “Grand Experiment” series in The Detroit News, a series of columns where he humorously documents his attempt to cut $1,000 from his family budget. The series also was named a “Best in Business” winner earlier this year by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

The project is called "Bridging the Gap" and will focus on using theatre techniques to bridge the generation gap within the LGBT community. Joan Micklin Silver '56, the acclaimed director of Crossing Delancey, Hester Street, and TV movies In the Presence of Mine Enemies and Hunger Point will be the filmmaker-in-residence at the 6th annual Santa Barbara Jewish Film Festival, April 7-10, 2011. She began in film when her husband, Ray Silver, became her producer and raised the $400,000 necessary to make Hester Street, which went on to earn $5 million and garner a best screenplay Academy Award nomination for Silver.

Ellen Perecman '75 announces the world premiere adaptation of Displaced Wedding. Ellen translated the play from the original Yiddish and adapted it into English. Also, Ellen founded New Worlds Theatre Project and is its Producing Artistic Director.
He's just been liberated from a concentration camp. She stumbles upon him after emerging from the cellar where she's been hiding, and they fall in love instantly. But before the two can marry and move on with their lives they must confront the ghosts of their pasts -- quite literally. It's 1946. They've just survived the Nazi Holocaust in Europe. It's 1979. They've just survived the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. It's 1994. They've just survived the genocide in Rwanda. Is it too soon for a wedding?

Lynn Gilbert '59 spent the past year traveling. She took photos of the interiors of Nomad and Gypsy homes, the interiors of tents in the Sahara, traveling down the coast of Turkey, Syria and Jordan in public transportation. She was invited to do a coffee table book by a backpacker who is an Oxford scholar and author. They will travel next to some remote areas in China and central Asia. From her studies in environmental justice and land management practices to her devotion to community building and social change, Emma Gaalaas Mullaney '07 has long been active in environmental policy engagement. Now, the Ann Arbor, Michigan, native is in Nagoya, Japan, to represent U.S. youth at the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Mullaney was selected from applicants across the country as a delegate through the SustainUS, a volunteer-led youth organization for sustainable development.

The Board of Trustees of the American University in Cairo has announced the selection of Lisa Anderson '72 as the university's next president. Anderson has served as the university's provost since 2008. Prior to joining AUC as its chief academic officer, Anderson served as the James T. Shotwell Professor of International Relations at Columbia University, as well as the former dean of the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia. Dr. Anderson "is a renowned scholar recognized internationally for her research and scholarship on politics in the Middle East and North Africa."

Jeannine Pitas '05, in 2006, traveled to Uruguay on a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship. With the help of Uruguayan writers Roberto Echavarren and Nidia di Giorgio, she translated three books by the acclaimed Uruguayan poet Marosa di Giorgio (1932-2004). One of then, "The History of Violets," will be published in bilingual form later this Fall by Brooklyn-based Ugly Duckling Presse.

Michael Bachrach '96 was featured on the New York Times front page, for his victory in court, when a federal judge barred prosecutors on Wednesday from using a crucial witness in the first trial of former Guantánamo detainee, Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani. Michael is part of Ghailani's legal team, led by Peter E. Quijano. Michael said of the case, "Not surprisingly, I'm the principle writer of all of the defense submissions in this case, including my co-counsel's statement to the press yesterday. SLC idealism at its best!"

“Tea House” has packed up its tea ware and moved from New York City into the Huntington Bank building in Grand Rapids, MI for ArtPrize. Arielle Javitch '97 made her Toronto International Film Festival feature debut on Saturday with "Look, Stranger," which stars acclaimed Romanian actress Anamaria Marinca as a woman wandering an unnamed country in the grip of civil war. Ms. Javitch shot the film in a mix of naturally idyllic and desolate ghost-town locations on the Serbian-Montenegran border. But her protagonist's two-step of trust and wariness, tension and calm, could apply to anyone on the margins of awful events.

In 1988, Bill Ochs, SLC MFA '71, self-published a how-to-play the pennywhistle book titled The Clarke Tin Whistle. It has gone on to become a classic in its field, selling 250,000 copies in various editions. Ochs recently created an abridged beginner's edition of the book titled Pennywhistle for Beginners and is offering it and a pennywhistle to schools at a cost of just $5 per student. He has also launched a new website dedicated to promoting the idea of using this inexpensive but versatile folk instrument to keep music education alive in the school curriculum during tough budgetary times. Ochs thinks the pennywhistle is a much better choice as a first instrument for children than the ubiquitous plastic recorder. For more information, see the Penny Whistle web site.

Joan Cowen Bowman MFA 2005 was born in 1932, but her family memoir, The Power of the Place, spans 140 years. It starts in 1869 with the birth of her grandfather, one of 14 children and a self-made millionaire by 1900. Although he dies the year before she is born, she spends her entire childhood on his magical estate, which provides both the inspiration and the framework for this story. The Place, which he built on the North Jersey Shore in 1906, is a bastion of both privilege and emotional deprivation. Bowman's personal saga is one woman's journey to conscious living.

Michele Brody '89 continues her Tea House project as she joins this year's ArtPrize, which will take place in Grand Rapids, MI this fall. For her installation, she plans to hang over 400 stained tea bags inscribed with people's stories and memories associated with or inspired by tea. She requests everyone's participation in this collaborative installation – she would be glad to send anyone via snail mail a few pre-stained, as well as plain tea bags for writing down your own memories or stories inspired by tea. Feel free to make a cuppa with the plain ones, as well as pass out some to a few friends or family to share their memories with as well. Carol Cheney '66, a past SLC trustee and alumnae/i association president, is recipient of the Frank L. Ashmore Award for Service to CASE and the Advancement Profession. Cheney, president and creative director at Cheney & Co., a creative marketing firm that serves independent schools, first became involved with CASE in 1979 when she was director of publications and public relations at Choate Rosemary Hall. Since then, Cheney has shared her expertise in independent school advancement by volunteering as a faculty member for numerous conferences, serving as a judge for CASE awards programs and writing articles for CURRENTS magazine and chapters for CASE books. 2010 brought the official release of "Thinktankubator," the first full-length release on Summer Break Records by Allan Hayslip '91 under the band name Bonedome, and the reviews are strong. Magnet Magazine wrote "Hayslip's vocals are like those of a young Bowie, but the music has an appeal similar to the Hives. The overall effect is somewhat orchestral in scope with a lot of drive and a truly sublime guitar tone." Friend Lisa Loeb sent a note saying "Very moody, rock, interesting, complicated, but like reading a book." Former fellow SLC'er Rhett Miller '93 (of the Old 97's) wrote "Thinktankubator reminds me of some of my favorite records without ever seeming derivative." And BabySue.Com said 'Instantly impressive stuff...We can hear traces of a wide range of folks while spinning this disc... but specific artists that come to mind include David Bowie, The Psychedelic Furs, and Peter Murphy.... Amanda Rivkin '06, a recent recipient of a Young Explorers Grant from the National Geographic Society is currently in Turkey completing work on her photographic project, "Exploring the Evolving Oil Economy: Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline," that took her to Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. Indie musician Julia Barry '04 just released her newest album, "Once, Or Twice," a jazz/blues-tinged collection of tracks on wonder and longing. "Once, or Twice" features 11 original songs played by Julia Barry on vocals and keyboard instruments, John Lenis on bass, Dan Tinkoff/Samuel Stein '05 on guitar, and Jon Searles on drums. Additional instrumentals include strings and organ (Ryan Gregg). "Once, or Twice" was recorded and mixed by Meredith McCandless at FLUXstudios.net, NYC, produced by Ben Lindell, and mastered by Michael Tudor at Defiant Recording.

Josh Maurer '86 and Alixandre Wtilin were nominated for 9 Emmy Awards for their film "GEORGIA O'KEEFFE" which they Executive Produced through their production company City Entertainment. The film stars Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons, written by Michael Cristofer and directed by Bob Balaban. The film has received 9 Emmy nominations, including Best Picture.
Also, their new television series "RUBICON" which Josh executive produced and originally developed, premiered on August 1, 2010 on AMC Network to great reviews and the highest ratings in AMC's history for a pilot presentation. The series has been picked up for a full 13 season order.

The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University has awarded the twentieth Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize to photographer Tiana Markova-Gold and writer Sarah Dohrmann MFA '05. The $20,000 award is given to encourage collaboration in documentary work in the tradition of acclaimed American photographer Dorothea Lange and writer and social scientist Paul Taylor. Lange and Taylor worked together for many years, most notably on fieldwork that resulted in American Exodus (1941), a seminal work in documentary studies.

Monique Marissa Lukens '97 just had her song, “Wo Sind Sie?” (Jake “Heartache” Benson Trance Mix) placed in a soon-to-be-released Edoardo Ponti film (Coming and Going '10). She also performed at the California Cougar Convention with a campy social-equality dance song deemed the National Cougar Convention Anthem. The song is titled “Older Women, Younger Guys” and is featured on CNN iReport. Also in the works is a proposed reading of a play she has written at the Underground Theatre (Hollywood).

Grace Paley: Collected Shorts is a feature-length documentary produced by Lilly Rivlin (Can You Hear Me?, Gimme a Kiss). The musical score was composed and performed by Sarah Lawrence alum and saxophonist, Kyle Casey Chu '10. The film first premiered on July 25, 2010 at San Francisco's historic Castro Theater as part of the 30th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. It has been announced this film will be screened at the Woodstock and San Diego Film Festivals.

Singer Jenna Esposito '00 has some exciting performances in New York City lined up for the summer. On July 10, she guest stars in Judy Garland Live. On June 27th, Myles Alexander '10 participated in his first Sprint Triathlon (750 meter swim, 20k cycle, and 10k run) in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. He was 5th across the finish line and placed 1st in his age and gender group (male 20-24), completing the race in 1:14:45.

Parlour No. 16, Golden Tales, explores the invented worlds of Lara Allen, Megha Gupta, Faten Kanaan, Sandra Mack-Valencia and Natalia Yovane. Through their use of visionary and mythical iconography as well as a broad range of media, each artist develops their own unique mythology. In this way, Golden Tales strives to explore how, even today, we desire to be rooted in a mythical sensibility. These artists use constructed and remembered mythical icons, fictional and nonfictional fragments of history, in order to develop new realities.

Rebecca Lerman '03 is appearing Off-Broadway in the upcoming play Beautiful Thing as Leah. Olivier and John Whiting Award winning Johnathan Harvey's Beautiful Thing is being produced by Nicu's Spoon and directed by Michelle Kuchuk. The highly anticipated performance depicts the story of two boyhood pals in the slums of South London who discover a secret, a 'beautiful thing' - love - in a violent and dangerous place. Rebecca Lee Lerman just completed her first national tour with Theaterworks/USA, playing Charlie Chan and Rosamond in the musical adaptation of the children's book, Nate the Great! Eleanor Cory '65 makes her world premiere in String Quartet no. 3 in this season's MOMA Summergarden Concert Series. Summergarden is free and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The Sculpture Garden may close if attendance reaches maximum capacity. Entrance to Summergarden is through the Sculpture Garden gate on West Fifty-fourth Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues. The Sculpture Garden opens at 7:00 p.m., and concerts start at 8:00 p.m. and run approximately one hour to ninety minutes.

Brian O'Connor, '82, won a Best in Business award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers' 15th annual Best in Business contest. O'Connor, personal finance editor and columnist for The Detroit News, was honored in the projects category for his "Grand Experiment" series chronicling his attempt to cut $1,000 from his family's monthly budget. The same series also received a feature writing prize from the Michigan Associated Press Editorial Association.

Avis Harper Brooks MA HAP 2004 announces that CT was one of 26 grantees of the CDC Colorectal Cancer Control Program. As a result of a successful grant application to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CT Department is one of the 26 states awarded fund for a colorectal cancer control program. This is a five year initiatives. The CRCCP's goal is to increase colorectal (colon) cancer screening rates among men and women aged 50 years and older from about 64% to 80% in the funded states by 2014. An increase in screening rates will reduce illness and death from colorectal cancer.

Kay Chernush '66 announces her new exhibit, "The Us and The They: Prejudice and Empathy in America's Smallest County". This exhibit explores in images and in words how we see ourselves, how we see others, and how the "Other" sees us. In this new and perceptive series, photographer Kay Chernush turns her lens on a diverse group of Arlingtonians, using photography to hold a mirror up to the prejudice and stereotypes they have experienced in their everyday lives. Gallery visitors will be invited to write their own reactions and perceptions on the walls surrounding the images. This work is supported by a 2010 Spotlight Grant from the Arlington Commission for the Arts.
