April 17 LA: Good People by David Lindsay-Abaire '92
Margie Walsh can't catch a break. Laid off from her job at the dollar store, Margie is faced with the reality that South Boston is providing her the same level of opportunity it always has: none. Wry, rough around the edges and ready to make a change, she goes to seek out the one who got away - both from "Southie" and from her. Instead, she finds herself in the burbs and out of her element, facing the question - is opportunity granted or earned? Nominated for a 2011 Tony Award for Best Play, Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People takes an affectionate look at the 'haves' and 'have nots' through the eyes of characters who won't be ignored.

June 17 LA: Screening of “Finding Joe” Film and Discussion
Finding Joe, a movie by Patrick Takaya Solomon, is an exploration of famed Mythologist Joseph Campbell's studies and their continuing impact on our culture. Through interviews with visionaries from a variety of fields interwoven with enactments of classic tales by a sweet and motley group of kids, the film navigates the stages of what Campbell dubbed The Hero's Journey: the challenges, the fears, the dragons, the battles, and the return home as a changed person. Rooted in deeply personal accounts and timeless stories, Finding Joe shows how Campbell's work is relevant and essential in today's world and how it provides a narrative for how to live a fully realized life - or as Campbell would simply state, how to "follow your bliss".

Bernardo Ruiz's ('95) REPORTERO at Sarah Lawrence

Faculty member Patrisia Macias '94 screened SLC alum Bernardo Ruiz's ('95) film, REPORTERO on Tuesday, April 3rd at the Heimbold Visual Arts Center for Latin American and Latino/a Studies (LALS).

REPORTERO follows a veteran reporter and his colleagues at ZETA, a Tijuana-based muckraking weekly, as they stubbornly ply their trade in what has become one of the deadliest places in the world to be a journalist. In Mexico, more than 40 journalists have been murdered or have gone missing since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa came to power and launched a government offensive against the country's powerful drug cartels and organized crime groups.

Director Ruiz is the director/producer of American Experience: Roberto Clemente (PBS, 2008). He is the recipient of a New York Foundation on the Arts fellowship in film and his work has been supported by grants from the Ford Foundation, Sundance, Cinereach and ITVS, among others. Discussion with Bernardo followed the screening.
