Join History faculty members Matthew Ellis, Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation Chair in Middle Eastern Studies and International Affairs, and Philipp Nielsen, Adda Bozeman Chair in International Relations, for a six-week seminar series on the complex intertwined history of Israel and Palestine. The series will begin by setting the deeper historical context in the 19th century, focusing on the emergence of Zionism and the demographics of Ottoman Palestine before World War I. We will then move on to cover key topics such as the British Mandate for Palestine; European anti-Semitism and the Holocaust; the War of 1948 and Palestinian Nakba; the establishment and evolution of the State of Israel; the 1967 War and occupied territories; the rise of Palestinian nationalism; and the entrenchment of conflict over the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Weekly readings will be provided. Seminars will be held on the following Tuesdays at 5:30 PM Eastern Time: 1/28, 2/4, 2/11, 2/18, 2/25, and 3/4. Space is limited. Registration is for all six seminars. Seminars cannot be signed up for individually.
